At the close of principal photography, there was 12 days of film. Cameron cut that to 202 minutes and, eventually, to the running time of 195 minutes.
Editing was done at Skywalker Ranch, owned by George Lucas. The final sound mix was done at Skywalker Sound.
"Collide with Destiny" was the original tag line for the film. Arthur Cohen and Nancy Goliger of Parmamount's marketing department developed the "Nothing on Earth Could Come Between Them" tag line, superimposed over a picture of the ship's bow.
The movie trailer was 5 minutes long, double the limit allowed by MPAA, and required a special waiver.
The first test screening took place on 7/14/97 at Minneapolis' Mall of America; the second in Portland, Oregon on 8/12/97; the third in Anaheim Hills, California on 8/17/98.
During the research after the first test screening, conducted by National Research Group, the audience gave DiCaprio and Winslet an unprecedented 80% excellent rating.
Including marketing and post-production costs, Titanic cost $1 million per minute.
The total cost to make and market Titanic was $300 million.
The US premiere was originally scheduled for 7/4/97, then moved to 7/18/97, 8/1/97 and, on 5/27/97, was finally announced for 12/19/97.
Cameron told Composer James Horner he did not want a pop song on the soundtrack. Horner, feeling the soundtrack needed a song to sum up Rose's feelings for Jack, secretly comissioned Celine Dion to sing "My Heart Will Go On." He took the demo tape to Cameron, who immediately agreed to include it in the film.
Norwegien vocalist Sissel is the voice heard throughout Titanic's instrumental tracks.
