Discovery of the Titanic

Some people wanted the Titanic to continue to rest in peace, undisturbed. However, that wish did not come true. Almost since the day she sank, people have been trying to find and raise Titanic. In 1981, Jack Grimm, a Texas millionaire, attempted to locate her. In one of his last dives, he claimed to see a propeller.

On September 1, 1985, IFREMER and the Wood Holes Oceanographic Institution, an expedition of French and American scientists, discovered the wreck and were the first to see her in over 70 years. Grimm argued that he was the first to find the wreck, and it ws using his notes that IFREMER was able to locate the ship. They returned to Titanic in 1986 and photographed Titanic's propellers, proving that they were still on Titanic and Jack Grimm had not in fact sighted them. The group returned a year later, this time with Titanic Ventures and RMS Titanic, Inc. to perform site mapping and recover artifacts. After that, no important dives to the Titanic were made until 1991, when IMAX Corporation and the P.P Shirsov Institute fimed the Titanic. The expedition ws known for bumping into things and destroying parts of the wreck as they carelessly maneuvered around Titanic. In 1995, James Cameron visited the site and conducted filming gor his movie. Then, in 1996, the Titanic was finally moved. The IFREMER and RMS Titanic, Inc. companies attempted to raise a 10 ton piece of the hull. Unfortunately, the support ropes gave way and the Titanic was not moved very far.
