News of the disaster spread quickly. The tragedy of the Titanic was felt by everyone on Earth. The stories of bravery and valor were told around the world. Along with these stories circulated many rumors. One rumor was that the Titanic had not sunk, but had come across engine problems and loaded its passengers onto another ship and turned around to go back to England. Some of the more fabulous rumors said that the mummy of an ancient Egyptian king had been placed in the cargo hold of the Titanic. The gods were displeased that the mummy was leaving Egypt and sank the Titanic. The mummy was saved, and once in New York, it brought bad luck to whoever saw it. It was returned to Egypt on the Empress of Ireland, which also sank. Th mummy was saved once again, and put on the Lusitania. The Lusitania became the third ship to sink under the mummy's spell. However, this time the mummy was not saved and rests in the Lusitania's cargo hold. Both of these rumors were quickly proved false.
The Titanic disaster had a large impact on the world. "SOS" was adopted as a universal distress call because it is easy to recognize. Also, each ship must have 24-hour radio watch. The US Congress passed a law requiring all boats to have enough lifeboats for everyone on board. This led to the sinking of a passenger boat, the Eastland, when the boat was overloaded with lifeboats and sank, killing 812 people. The boat was leaving from the La Salle Street dock on the Chicago Rver, when it listed to port and capsized.
After the initial shock of the Titanic, she faded from the public eye. Followed by two world wars and the depression, a ship sinking did not seem like that great of a tragedy. The stories of brave deeds were forgotten, and the heroes of that night were lost from memory. If not for one man, the Titanic might have never been heard of again. That man was Walter Lord. He sailed on the Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, and learned of the Titanic's plight. In 1955, he wrote A Night to Remember, and Titanic's story was told around the world once more.
Now Titanic is one of the most well known castastrophes ever. It has inspired many books, movies, paintings, and other works of art. A Night to Remember was released as a movie in 1958, and is one of the most factual portrayals of the disaster to date. Saved From The Titanicstarred Miss Dorothy Gibson, the very first person to be loaded in a lifeboat on Titanic. Titanic, made by 20th Century Fox, was loosely based on the tragedy. A Nazi film that portrayed all Americans and English on the ship as drunkedn fools and all the Germans on the ship as brave heroes ws also made, but it was poorly made and very inaccurate. Raise the Titanic was a novel written by Clive Cussler that suggested creating a "Star Wars" type weapon to raise the Titanic. One of the most recent works that Titanic inspired is James Cameron's Titanic, a film that ties a love story in with the tragedy of Titanic.
All those books and movies were written years after Titanic sank. But one book linked to Titanic, Futility, was published 16 years before Titanic's voyage. It was written by a little-known author named Morgan Robertson. He wrote about the largest ship ever created, carrying the richest and most famous people in the world at the time on her maiden voyage. The ship weighed 70,000 tons, while Titanic weighed 66,000 tons. It was 800 feet long. Titanic was 882 feet long. Both of the ships had a top speed of about 25 knots, and were able to carry 3,000 passengers. Neither ship had enough lifeboats for all the passengers. Both ships were called 'unsinkable'. On an April night this fictitious ship struck an iceberg and sank on her maiden voyage. The name of the ship was the Titan.
